Things to Consider

Am I Doing Enough?

Many families ask this question when they are in the process of providing rehabilitation for their child. Perhaps your child was not identified early enough, perhaps there is confusion as to; ‘Where to access services?’ ‘What professionals should you see? What is the best course of therapy?’ and ‘Are these decisions that you are making the right ones?’

The professionals who act as the team to many children’s rehabilitation program include an Occupation/and or Physical Therapist, a Speech Language Pathologist, and a Behavioural/Developmental Specialist. Many parents worry that they are not involving their children in enough therapies. These therapies are the core to most programs. However it is not required that all children have this exact combination at the same time.

CH.I.L.D. acts as the Behavioural/Developmental Specialist in your child’s therapeutic team. We manage children’s behaviours and teach them skills or reduce maladaptive behaviours. The behavioural aspect is that we teach skills using behavioural principles. The developmental aspect is that we teach skills according to developmental milestones. We focus on teaching skills ranging from independent skills to highly complex learning objectives for academic functioning. CH.I.L.D. is often the core to any therapy. If parents do not have any other professionals involved in the team then CH.I.L.D. will provide referrals to respected professionals in the community.

It is overwhelming the amount of information parents receive from the internet. There are literally hundreds of different types of therapies available. However many of them have not been scientifically validated. If you have the core team listed above working with your child you are doing more than enough for your child to succeed.

There are additional therapies that may be helpful to some children. Your team may be the best people to seek advice if you question whether you are doing enough. They work with your child and understand their needs intimately. Any recommendations will be made based on your child’s interest rather that marketing strategies of the latest therapy.

Costs of Therapy at CH.I.L.D.:

CH.I.L.D. is a not for profit organization. That means that all revenue is used to pay for the costs which are comprised of the center, highly qualified instructor therapists. This team is dedicated to the well being of your child. The cost of therapy is strictly to pay for these highly skilled professionals. CH.I.L.D. fees are comparable with other reputable center based organizations. Fees are standard for all families. There are no discounts or promotional fees for therapy. The benefit of a center based organization is to ensure that only the most qualified professionals are working with your child. As a result the fees reflect quality in selection of individuals to work with your child. The center monitors fees from other agencies to ensure that fees are not inflated by individual therapists nor reduced drastically by inexperienced therapists to lure new clients. The only times fees are accommodated are for families with multiple children attending the center for therapy simultaneously.
